What is Phishing

Phishing is when scammers use email or text messages to trick you into sending personal information or performing a certain action such as transferring funds to a specific account number. The intended purpose is to steal details like passwords, bank account information and access to your accounts.

How to identify these messages

Phishing emails or texts usually look like they are from a credible source, i.e.RoomRaccoon or your Bank. The emails usually use the same layout and styling of the brand they're copying while they are being sent from a different source - so please take note of the sending address.

Phishing emails and texts usually call you to take action. These emails will instruct you to open a link to a payment gateway, make payment to a fake invoice, confirm personal data, etc. If the communication requests any of the above, please proceed with caution as it is likely to be a phishing attempt.

What you should know

RoomRaccoon would never ask you for personal information and credentials such as:

  • Credit or debit card numbers

  • Bank account details

  • RoomRaccoon password or log in details

RoomRaccoon will never request payment through a third-party website or vendor. The texts or emails might link to a URL -  if you do not recognize the URL, do not click on this until you have verified the source.

What should I do if I’ve clicked a link or provided personal information

  • Change your RoomRaccoon password immediately to a new and stronger password.

  • Update your password on any websites where you use the same email and password combination.

  • Follow your email service providers security guidelines to report the email.

  • Contact your financial institution if you entered any payment information, as it may have been compromised.

Good to know

  • When you receive an email requesting personal information, please don’t click on any link or provide any personal information.

  • Another check you can do is to look at the sender’s email address or use your mouse to hover over the links to check if they are directed to the expected site.
  • Anti-virus software is also highly recommended to ensure that you are protected.
